What is Forging?
Shaping metal by the forging process involves heating the metal to a plastic state and then hammering it into a designed shape. Modern forging is done with the use of cavity tooling...or molds carved from hard tool steel into the desired shape. These tools are placed in a forge hammer capable of delivering a blow of many tons of force. Red hot metal placed onto the forge tool and then struck with the forge hammer is formed quickly into a part. Metal shaped in this manner which is then cooled and polished becomes many times stronger than the original material because the process re-organizes random fibers of the metal into a grain structure of great stability and strength.
